An Effortless Ease

The Welcoming of Peace

Saying For Today: Your being effortless ease is more important than trying to bring calm or consolation into a situation by doing or saying something.

To be open to openness is grace. It is waiting for you. It can't be obtained through will.

Gerald G. Jampolsky, M.D., shares in Teach Only Love the following story about the arising of peace.

There was a minister in Switzerland, sixty-four years old and near retirement, who began to question his life and his beliefs about God. As he did so, he started having many doubts about himself and his concepts of reality. He became so depressed that he decided to put God on the shelf and get a substitute minister. Attending the local pub became his major activity. A few days after all these changes had begun, a message came from a woman in his parish saying that her husband had just died. She lived just two doors away, and the minister immediately went to her home. He knew exactly what to say because he had been in this situation many times before. However, just as he began to open his mouth, a little voice inside said, "Say nothing; just think the word peace." About five minutes went by, and as he started to give his talk again, he received the same message. An hour went by, and finally the wife began to speak. She said that she could not understand what was happening. Her husband was dead in bed and she was experiencing more peace than she had ever felt before in her life. He told her that he also was experiencing peace as never before. He felt for the first time that he knew what the peace of God was.

Tranquility arises in and from the Silence. Sometimes, words usher us into that calm. Yet, words are not always needed to receive the reassurance of peace; the effort to bring peace can hinder the arising of peace, the effort filling up the space. The application of will is only to position ourselves in receptivity - welcome, openness.

This is like flying a kite. By effort you position the kite for the wind to lift it. The wind moves the kite. You are not the wind. The kite is not the wind. The wind is Presence, or grace. Spirit-spirit is Wind, is Breath.

Regarding the arising of peace, more fundamental than the question of speaking or not is, "Do I trust the peace already here to show itself, without my needing to say or do anything at all to pull it into the situation here?"

See, too, when you embody the Silence, you embody peace. In Silence, you become the peace others and you long to enjoy. Your being effortless ease is more important than trying to bring calm or consolation into a situation by doing or saying something.
